Juicy Tuesday – Orange and Carrot Juice

orange and carrot juice 1

orange and carrot juice 1I am not quite sure why I haven’t posted this before, since it’s probably my favourite juice ever. You get a lovely creamy sweetness from the carrots mixed with fresh orange juice. It’s packed full of beta carotene and vitamins and is so cheerful you’re bound to feel happy whilst drinking it.

I’m not writing a recipe for this because it’s just oranges and carrots pushed through a juicer.  I will, however, share some tips:

5:2 Friday

5:2 diet

5:2 dietIt’s Friday, everyone, and round these parts that means a weekly round up of the 5:2 diet.

This week, I will confess I have lost no weight.  This could be one of two things:

1) The dreaded weightloss plateau of doom.

2) I have embarked on the 30 Day Shred, and although in five days I have lost inches around my arms, thighs, hips and tummy (eternal thanks, Jillian, you drill sergeant, you) I have definitely built muscle and as everyone knows muscle weighs more than fat.  So I don’t feel too bad about no weight loss if my bod is slightly leaner.

In any case, I have valiantly continued on with 5:2 despite the rather disappointing results.  This week’s meals are:

Fasting Day 1 (Monday)

Juicy Tuesday: The Hangover Juice

juicy tuesday hangover juice

juicy tuesday hangover juiceOn Easter Saturday night, my BFF came over for some dirty gin and prosecco cocktails before she stops drinking for a month in preparation for a trek she is doing in the Himalayas.  I kid you not.  She is trekking the world’s tallest mountain range to raise money for Hampshire’s homeless folk.  And as if that wasn’t enough, she is then working in Delhi on a linked project for a couple of days after her mammoth walk.  She’s been training hard, had painful jabs, and has been fundraising for the last year for this.  It’s pretty astounding, and if you can afford to chuck her some cash by way of sponsorship, she’ll love you forever, and might even make you some of the dirty gin and prosecco cocktails we got smashed on t’other night.

And by smashed, I mean, I was so drunk the room was spinning and when I went to bed, I actually wished I could be sick just so the spinning and nausea would stop. I LOVE gin and I LOVE prosecco, but together, they are lethal buggers.  That isn’t to say the cocktails weren’t delicious, because they were.  Probably the cheese and biscuits I decided we simply must have at 11:30pm wasn’t the wisest move.

So come Easter Sunday morning, I gingerly sipped a hangover juice, to soothe my head and appease my achy, alcohol soaked body, because I couldn’t bear the thought of tucking into chocolate, like the rest of my household.

This juice is full of good things, a big handful of carrots (I used 8), 2 oranges, 1 lemon, half an inch of fresh ginger, 1 small beetroot, half a cucumber, 1 apple and 2 pears.

Juicy Tuesday – Apple, Carrot, Celery and Beetroot Juice (with a twist of orange)

Juicy Tuesday

Juicy TuesdayThis week I made what Ruby excitedly calls a ‘pretty princess pink juice’ from apple, carrot, celery and beetroot.  She loves pink things, and before some so-called feminists jump on me and condemn me as a terrible, gender stereotyping mother, guess what: that’s ok.  She also loves turquoise and minty green and zooming around the park in her jeans on her scooter.  Calm down, people.  Have a juice.

Anyway, I made a puce juice, and it was delicious.

To make this blushing beauty, you will need:

  • 2 eating apples.  Royal Gala is nice for this, or Pink Lady. Not Granny Smith.  Never Granny Smith.
  • 2 carrots.
  • 2 sticks of celery, leaves on, if you have them.  No worries if not.
  • 1 medium sized raw beetroot.  It *must* be raw beetroot, not pre-cooked, pickled, vacuum packed or otherwise.
  • 1 slice of orange (and you can juice the rest of it as well, if you like).

Juicy Tuesday – Apple, Pineapple, Lime and Avocado Smoothie

juicy tuesday

smoothie 3Hooray! It’s Tuesday again, and that means another Juicy Tuesday post!

Today I made a smoothie of 2 apples, half a pineapple, half a lime, half a cucumber and half an avocado.  This smoothie is creamy, yet tart, and packed full of really good things:

Apples contain a tasty shot of vitamins A, B, C and E, as well as folate, Calcium, Magnesium and Pectin.

Pineapples contain an enzyme called Bromeline, which helps dissolve mucous – so great if you are feeling snotty and bunged up, as a lot of us are at this time of year.

The acidity in lime is good for scouring the intestines (nice image there, right?) and, like other citrus fruits, has a high vitamin content.

Cucumbers are a diuretic, and have a high nutrient rich water content.  They contain silica, which gives elasticity to the skin and is great for the complexion.  Silica also strengthens the connective tissue that holds the body together. Cucumber is also a natural anti-inflammatory.  Not bad for something that doesn’t have a whole lot of flavour.

Finally, avocados are full of vitamin E and are fab for skin, hair and nails.

The 5:2 Diet

5 2 diet

5:2 dietJust after Christmas, I had a good look at myself in the mirror and I wasn’t that pleased with what I saw.  I’d very much donned my ‘winter coat’ and was carrying around a good stone more than I should be.  Enough was enough; the belly had to go.

All through January I lived by the Antidiet, allegedly coined by The Londoner, and I gave up Diet Coke.  No fizzy drinks worked, and I happily shed 10lbs without really trying that hard (don’t hate me, it was all easy on, easy off weight, caused by boozing and Cadbury Roses at Christmas).  But then that thing happened that dieters dread.

The Weight Loss Plateau of Doom.

There I was, stuck somewhere in hell between Chub City and Tummy Town, and the weight was not shifting.  So, I abandoned the Antidiet (which I now think is a fairly toshy, anyway, and I am seriously doubting the integrity of it’s creator: no one who eats burgers and chicken wings is that skinny, I don’t care what kind of metabolism you have. Just no.)

I chatted with my Ma, who has been raving about the 5:2 diet for ages now.  She’s lost, and kept off, some weight and she looks fantastic. If you don’t know what the 5:2 diet is, read on…
