Today is Tuesday, and up until yesterday, I was hungover. From a night out on Friday. Apparently my days of heavy drinking and not feeling like a dead piece of death for days afterwards are done.
In any case, Friday evening saw the opening of Bottega Wapping, an Italian restaurant and deli in Metropolitan Wharf, Wapping, London. So, I donned my heels and headed off for a glass of something cold, and a little something to nibble on. We arrived just after 6 and it was already packed. People were spilling out on to the street at the front, drinking prosecco and holding little plates of delicious things, laughing and talking and generally being merry.
Inside, the restaurant is centred around the bar and kitchen area, it has a vaguely industrial feel that is perfect for Metropolitan Wharf. There is exposed brick, a concrete floor, cages of wine, and big windows. It feels relaxed and trendy – you could happily grab a coffee, or sit down for a relaxed lunch, and later on come back for a swanky dinner.
And so on to the little plates of delicious things. Bottega does not disappoint. The promised nibbles turned out to be bowls of oozy risotto and quinoa with fresh seafood, fresh egg pasta, the softest gnocchi with green pesto. Creamy mozzarella and crispy suppli. There were breadsticks wrapped in ham and an enormous parmigiana you could just hack bits from to eat as a piece of cheese, rather than to sprinkle over pasta – something I took full advantage of. And it was all mouthwateringly devine. Italian food as it should be; fresh, packed full of flavour, comforting and moreish. I ate more than I needed and less than I wanted.
Bottega also boasts a deli, selling freshly made Italian breads, meats, pasta, cheese, and delicious tarts, as well as excellent quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
At less than a five minute stroll from Wapping station, and right on the Thames, Bottega Wapping is in a fantastic location, and definitely worth a visit whether you’re local or not. Why not grab yourself some lunch and take it down to Wapping beach, around the corner? tides permitting.
