Blackberry Vodka

A while ago, my Granny’s neighbour passed away leaving a hugely overgrown garden chock full of blackberries.  I’m not one to pass up a chance to snaffle up nature’s bounty, and since Granny was friendly with her neighbour, yesterday we went scrumping.  I came home with at least a couple of kilos of blackberries (and a terracotta plant pot.  Well, it’s not as if it’s going to be missed) , most of which are in my freezer for future crumbles and cakes.

But 600g of which are fermenting in a kilner jar along side 300g of sugar and a bottle of vodka.  I do like fruit liquours and since I had such a huge abundance of blackberries I decided to have a bash at it.

So, assemble your ingredients

  • 1 bottle of vodka. I bought a cheap bottle because it’s getting flavoured. This one was £8.99 for a 70cl bottle
  • 600g blackberries
  • 300g white granulated sugar.
  • 1 kilner jar. I sterilised it in a low oven.  I don’t know if you really need to, but I did anyway. If you have rubber seals on the lid of the jar, remove these prior to sterilising.

Put your blackberries in the jar, and add the sugar.

Pour in the vodka and seal the jar.

Give it a shake, and put in a dark place.  You need to shake the jar once a day for a month, and then once or twice a month for the following two months. This is the first time I’ve made a vodka infusion but apparently it’s ready for drinking after three months.  I’ll keep you posted!
